How to join merchant navy after the completion of mechanical engineering

The Merchant Navy plays a vital role in global trade, transporting goods and people across the world’s oceans. Embarking on a career in the Merchant Navy after completing a degree in mechanical engineering can be a challenging opportunity for those passionate about the maritime industry.

If you have completed your mechanical engineering studies and are curious about a career at sea, these are the steps and pre-requisites for joining the Merchant Navy. From specialized maritime training to obtaining the necessary certifications, this journey requires a combination of education, practical experience, and adherence to international maritime standards.

The solution for this is the GME course or the Graduate Marine Engineering which is a one-year PG program for Mechanical engineering graduates which is for 6 months. After the completion of the course, one is eligible for 6 months of training on the assigned vessel. Once you have completed the required training period, you will need to appear for the Certificate of Competency (COC) Examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping.

Eligibility criteria for admission to the Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course-

To be eligible for the GME course, you must hold a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture and have secured a minimum of 55% in the final year of the degree program. You should not have more than six cumulative instances of Repeats/Failures throughout the degree program and must be below 28 years of age.

You need to be in satisfactory physical and medical condition to be eligible for the GME course. A thorough medical examination, overseen by a Panel Doctor sanctioned by D.G. Shipping is obligatory. Specific eyesight criteria apply, including a distance vision requirement in each eye and colour blindness restrictions.

The selection process for the GME course-

• Eligible candidates will be required to participate in entrance examinations conducted by the respective college. Successful candidates will progress to subsequent stages.

• Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a panel interview, which is an integral part of the admission process.

• Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive health check-up to assess their eyesight and overall physical fitness.

• Those who complete the health assessment will commence a one-year pre-sea training program, which is a vital component in preparing for a career in marine engineering.

So, pursuing the Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course provides a promising avenue for individuals with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. The eligibility criteria ensure candidates are well-equipped academically and physically for the demands of a maritime career. The selection process, involving entrance exams, panel interviews, and thorough medical assessments, is crafted to pinpoint candidates with the requisite aptitude and fitness for success at sea
