Getting a Ph.D. degree is the highest level of qualification and is seen with great respect in any particular country. Ph.D. stands for Doctor of Philosophy and generally the duration lasts from 3 to 6 years depending on different courses and their modules. It’s a Doctorate degree and prepares individuals to do research in that particular chosen field making them skilled in problem-solving skills, communication skills, critical thinking, etc. The course fee in India ranges from 50k to 1 lac and the annual allowances gained from the government range from 4.3L to 10L. There are different exams through which one can get enrolled to this level of education namely CSIR UGC NET, GATE, JGEEBILS, IIT JAM, and institutional level exams. Also, there exist different types of PhD.D. exams full-time, part-time, integrated, distance, and industry-sponsored.
Eligibility & Procedure for PhD
Then if one talks about the procedure of how to apply for a Ph.D. in India then there are several steps like the need to find a mentor who can supervise you till the end of the journey. Then it is necessary to have a full-time master’s degree with an annual aggregate of 55% from a renowned university with a concession of 5% to 10% offered to those who belong to lower sections of society only if they present their caste certificate. After this, the candidate needs to fill out the application form for Ph.D. and fill in all the necessary documents. ThAfter that the candidate needs to pass the Ph.D. entrance Exam and also have to submit the NOC from their previous institute.
At the time of selection, it’s seen whether the individual meets all the needs specified as well as has also qualified for the interview round that’s being held. Then if one passes all the rounds is offered a seat in particular where he or she has to fill in all the necessary details along with the tuition fees and can start with their studies. The Ph.D. course module is furtherly divided into separate sections like coursework, research proposal, comprehensive exams, research, and dissertation.
GATE Exam
Now if one focuses on different types of entrance-level exams then the first that pops up into one’s mind is GATE. One of the greatest benefits of this is that one can avail gate fellowship if they had financial assistance at their master’s or Doctorate level and the selection process of the individual is based on two basic factors i.e. the interview round and how strong one’s statement of Purpose is i.e. how strongly and in a well-oriented manner it’s being presented.
There is a set of institutions that offer one to get admission through GATE and the further criteria is Candidates who either are GATE + JRF qualified with a score of 500-800 or are GATE + NET qualified with a score of 1000-2000 or are just GATE qualified with a score of 800 are considered to be offered a seat. Rest the above procedure of selection remains the same as that mentioned above.
CSIR UGC NET Exam
Then another qualifying level exam is NET in which after clearing the exam one has to write a synopsis in the concerned subject, as well as the academic background, which is also being checked. After this, if you are selected by the concerned authorities then a supervisor is being appointed to you that helps you in submitting all the necessary details and documents as well have to pay the tuition fees. Lastly, the individual is awarded NET along with a JRF qualification and the remaining process of enrollment remains the same as mentioned above.
Institute-Level PhD Entrance Exam
Last, comes the institution-level entrance examination that is conducted individually by each institute for Ph.D. level enrollment. After the examination an interview is conducted after which the results are released the individuals are selected as per the aggregate merit of the two. On the other hand if one has a JRF qualification in their hands then the university exempts them from college-level examination and directly chooses candidates based on the synopsis that’s being submitted by the individual along with his or her academic background. After this, the other procedures of admission remain the same as specified above.
