ANM and GNM Course Explained!! Should you choose them as a career?

ANM stands for Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery, a diploma course focusing on the study of health care of individuals provided in India. An individual learns how to take care of equipment, set up Operation Theater, provide medication timely to patients and maintain records. On the other hand, GNM stands for General Nursing and Midwifery. It deals with the education of nurses in general health care, nursing, and midwifery for patients. 

What is the take from the courses?

ANM is a one-year duration course. ANM students are educated on maternity care and assisting new mothers during pregnancy and post-delivery, among many other things. Candidates learn various aspects of medical care; that aim at improving the health of patients, families, and society on a wide long-term basis. General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course is a job-oriented diploma program that comprises training individuals in advanced skills in nursing with a focus on midwifery services. The duration of this course is three and a half years and enables students with the knowledge of maternity care.

Eligibility criteria

ANM Nursing Eligibility Criteria:-

  • The age should be 17 years by the end of the year of admission.
  • The maximum age criteria of the candidate should not exceed 35 years.
  • The candidate should have passed the class 12 examination with a record having Arts or Commerce stream (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, and Philosophy) and English Core/English Elective or Science or Health care Science – Vocational stream from a recognized Board of the Indian education system.
  • The candidate should be medically fit. They may have to provide a certificate declaring the same to the admission recruiter. 
  • Candidates who should have passed class 12 from the Arts or Science stream conducted by the National Institute of Open School are also eligible for admission. 
  • The candidate is allowed to admit only once a year in an academic year.

 

GNM admission criteria:-

  • 10+2 with English must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination subjects and English subject individually for any recognized board. 
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from the school recognized and listed by Indian Nursing council.

 

Entrance Examination:-

Admissions to ANM Colleges in India take place at the institute level and the state level. For some colleges, intakes are with entrance exams. On the other hand, some colleges provide merit-based admissions to the students applying yearly. 

Admission to Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course has the basis on a first-come-first-serve basis in most nursing colleges in India. There are no separate entrance exams in Private nursing colleges in India for GNM course admission.

Cut-off marks:-

  1. General- 59-65 Marks
  2. OBC- 52-58 Marks
  3. SC- 49-53 Marks
  4. ST- 45-50 Marks

Salary and skills required:-

Graduates can expect a starting salary in the range of Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000, directly proportional to their caliber. But with experience and attainment of further educational qualifications, they can earn Rs 3.2 to 7.8 Lakh per annum. The amount may fluctuate depending on the employer, organization, work caliber, and hospital.

The Nursing profession involves dealing with patients and assists doctors in providing round-the-clock care. While dealing with different types of people, the Nurse attending them should have enough patience to show empathy to the patients. Besides this, the Nurse should have demonstrated perfection in working with doctors, patients, and other hospital administrators. With this, compassion and excellent communication skills are the cherries on top of the cake. 

A nurse should be competent enough to communicate both in medical jargon (with doctors) and laymen’s terms (with patients). Also, a nurse should possess strong organizational and management skills as a nurse is also responsible for maintaining patient records safely.

The diploma-level program aims to train the students as nurses. It also helps to develop skills to function efficiently in a hospital environment. It’s one of the noblest professions. It requires an all-rounder person to comply with the needs and demands of it respectively. It leads to a successful and content life.
